By late June the clover in Derby's low back corners is loud with bees well before eight in the morning. That's the hour to be out — ahead of the south wind that leans on this town all afternoon and turns the light hard and white. Grass here grows in fits: a week of thunderstorms, then three weeks of sun, and staying even with it takes a schedule that actually gets kept. So the mower runs its lines, the trimmer takes the fence posts and the mailbox and the base of the young redbud, and the drive is cleared before the truck pulls away.
