Cottonwood Falls starts its day slowly, with mist lifting off the river below the low falls and early sun warming the limestone of the Chase County Courthouse at the head of Broadway. Fleshman’s tends lawns in a town that takes pride in its looks, from yards along the brick-paved street to homes tucked beneath the big trees near the water. Grass is mowed to a velvet evenness, trimmed close against stone steps and walls, and the walks are swept so the old brick can show itself off.
