Wagoner & Sons

About Wagoner & Sons

October in Colby brings the morning that finally bites — frost on the windshields along Franklin Avenue, the meadowlarks gone quiet, the pool at Fike Park shut and dreaming until June. Wagoner & Sons is out in it anyway, making the late cuts count while the grass still has a little growing left in it. Leaves and clippings get gathered rather than scattered, the drives and walks are re-cut sharp, and the yard goes into the cold looking squared away instead of shaggy. There is a real pleasure in the last mow of the year: lines straight, corners crisp, the whole lot tidy under a sky gone the color of pewter by four in the afternoon. Then the mowers come back around in spring, and the town turns green again the way it always does.
