Seen from a county road in May, northwest Kansas is pure geometry — center-pivot circles greening up one quarter-section at a time over the Ogallala water, and Colby set among them like a square in a field of rings. Taylor Landscapes works the small scale inside that big one: town lots, corner yards, the strip of grass between a driveway and a fence. The season starts when the buffalo grass finally goes from brown to green and stays that way, and from there it is a rhythm — mow, edge, trim, sweep it clean. Out past the west side of town the Cooper Barn stands over the Prairie Museum grounds, big enough to argue with the sky, a reminder that people here have always built and kept things at full size. A straight line where grass meets sidewalk is that same habit, scaled down.
