Cherryvale paved its Main Street in brick back when the oil money was still coming in, and those same bricks hold a hard frost longer into the morning than the asphalt streets running off from them. B & L Trenching spends most of its year cutting into that ground for lines and footings, and knows better than most crews how this soil freezes and holds through a Montgomery County winter. When snow comes, the company's equipment turns from digging to plowing, clearing the brick blocks downtown first since their surface holds ice hardest, then working out into the residential streets behind them. A trenching crew is used to reading ground most people never look at twice, and that habit carries over into knowing which driveway apron floods and freezes and which stays dry through a storm.
