There is water under this town — the springs that gave Bonner Springs its name, still moving somewhere beneath the oaks and hickories that hold the ridges. The LawnSmith takes that name at its word: a lawn is something shaped, gone over and over until the lines come true. Mow. Trim the corners no mower will reach. Edge the walk until the concrete shows a clean gray margin. Come October, when the wind runs down off the prairie and the leaves let go all at once, it means clearing them off the turf so the grass goes into the cold breathing. A block of yards looks better for it, and that is the entire point of the day.
