Before the shops on Beloit's Main Street switch on their lights, Great Plains Landscape & Design has already traced clean lines down the block, blade low against the curb where the Solomon River bottoms send their first hard frost into town. Mitchell County winters arrive sideways, wind combing across open wheat ground with nothing to slow it before it reaches the courthouse square, and a driveway left untouched turns to glare ice by the time school starts. The crew works the square's brick storefronts and the ranch-style streets behind them the same way they'd lay out a flower bed — square corners, a clean edge along the walk, nothing left ragged. By the time the flag goes up outside the courthouse, the lots they've cleared sit dark and dry against the white around them. Landscaping is their trade in warmer months; in the cold ones, it's driveways, walks, and lots kept open across Beloit and the Solomon River valley towns around it.
