Baxter Springs calls itself the first city in Kansas on Route 66, and the old highway still cuts straight through the brick downtown before the road crosses the Spring River at the edge of town. Lane's Lawn Service works those same streets in winter, clearing driveways and walkways on the blocks that back up to the old highway and down toward the river. The Spring River bottom holds cold air longer than the high ground near downtown, so the yards closest to the water are usually the last to shed their ice. It's a small-town route, covered on foot as much as by truck, one yard and one sidewalk at a time. By the time traffic picks up on the old highway through town, the walks along it are already clear.
