Autumn comes early to the brick streets of Winona Lake, just across the water from Warsaw, and by mid-October the maples along the old canal have given up most of what they were holding. In a county stitched together by a hundred glacial lakes, soil stays cool and damp late into fall, so timing the last cut and the last cleanup right matters more here than most places. The reward is a lawn put to bed properly: beds tidy, turf short enough to breathe, nothing left on the grass but light.
