Outside Warsaw's grid of lake roads, where the ground opens up into the farm country along Eagle Creek, G & G Hauling & Excavating clears the kind of long rural stretches that don't show up on anyone's map of downtown Warsaw at all. The creek bottoms hold frost stubbornly into the morning even after the fields above them have started to thaw, so a single road can run wet gravel on one end and packed ice on the other. Snow out here tends to drift across open fields and pile against fence rows rather than falling evenly, and the crew learns which stretches will need a second pass before they've finished the first. It's farmhouse-to-farmhouse work, a long way between driveways, nothing like the tight lake lanes closer to town. By midday the creek-side roads run clear, cutting a plain gray line through fields still locked up white.
