Saint John has grown fast on what used to be open Region farmland, new subdivisions filling in the flat prairie along US 41 while a few working fields still hold out between them, and T and J Snow and Ice Management runs its routes across both kinds of ground on the same winter morning. Lake Michigan sits close enough that a band of lake-effect snow can drop hard on Saint John's cul-de-sacs while towns just a few miles south stay dry, and the crew watches those bands the way other people watch a clock. Wind off the open fields still catches the newer streets before the trees planted along them have grown tall enough to break it, so a fresh subdivision drive can drift as bad as an old farm lane. Trucks work the loop streets and driveways before the commute into Chicago and Hammond gets moving, then double back through the older crossroads blocks near the center of town. The prairie under all those new roofs still runs the show most winters.
