By midday, when the sky over South Bend's west side has settled into a flat gray that seems to hang there most of January, CNT Property Maintenance is often three or four driveways into a route that will run until dark. This is a city built low and wide along the St. Joseph River, block after block of ranch houses and post-war bungalows, and a lot of those driveways empty onto streets where the plow truck comes through only once. Getting there early, clearing a path to the door and the mailbox and the trash cans at the curb, is the kind of unglamorous work that keeps a neighborhood moving on an ordinary Tuesday in winter. There's no dramatic backdrop to it — just block after block of South Bend rooftops going from buried to bare, one property at a time. By the time the streetlights come on, the route is finished and the next storm is already building somewhere out past the horizon.
