Yard Servants

About Yard Servants

By late September the light over Silver Lake goes long and gold near seven, and the county roads fill with grain trucks rolling toward the elevator. Yard Servants keeps mowing straight through it — the last cuts of the year on lots around town and out toward Mentone and Claypool, when the grass slows down but still wants an even line drawn across it. Trimming tight to fence posts and foundation plantings, edging the walks back to their true width, clearing leaves that stack against the windbreaks after the first hard wind swings out of the northwest. There is real satisfaction in leaving a yard squared away in November, buttoned down and level, ready for whatever northern Indiana pulls off the lakes. Small town, small lots, and every one of them looking cared for from the road.
