Sheridan still keeps its grain bins and its flat Hamilton County farmland close to the edges of town, even with the Indianapolis suburbs pushing closer every year from the south, and Sherley Unlimited Snow Company works both the old ground and the new. Cicero Creek runs low and slow along the edge of the fields outside town, holding a skin of ice while the farmland around it turns pale and even under the winter's first heavy snow. The company's trucks work the square first, clearing the lots and sidewalks around Sheridan's old storefronts before morning traffic heading north toward Westfield gets moving, then move out along the back roads to the farmhouses and newer homes alike. A field that's been picked clean of corn stubble holds less snow than a fencerow or a windbreak does, so the drifts here tend to gather in the same predictable spots year after year. By the time the last truck heads in, Sheridan's square sits clear and dark against a county gone entirely white.
