On spring mornings the fog lifts off the East Fork of the White River and lies low across the bottoms until the sun climbs high enough to burn it away. Von's Lawn's is out in it early, because grass in this valley wakes up fast once the ground warms and it waits on nobody. Mowing, string trimming, bed edges cut back sharp, winter's litter of sticks and matted leaves raked out and carried off — that is the shape of the season's first visits. There is a real satisfaction in watching a property go from shaggy to squared away in a single morning, striped and open and green clear to the property line. Out toward the Muscatatuck bottoms the land does as it pleases; in town, this is how it gets kept.
