About United Forestry Services

Scattered through the flat cropland around Russiaville are the small woodlots and windbreak lines that United Forestry Services spends its year managing—thinning what's grown too thick, taking down what an ice storm finally breaks. Those same tree lines are the only thing standing between an open field and the wind that would otherwise carry snow clear across it, so the crew that tends the timber also ends up plowing the drifts it piles. A driveway tucked behind a windbreak stays clearer longer than one standing open to the field, and knowing which is which saves a second trip on a bad morning. Trucks work out from Russiaville along the gravel farm roads, clearing farm drives before chores start and doubling back if the wind keeps loading them through the day. The woodlots stand bare and gray through the cold months, waiting on the same crew that will be back thinning them once the ground firms up.
