The farm ground around Russiaville drains toward Wildcat Creek through mile after mile of buried tile that Bell Drainage & Excavating lays and repairs most of the year, working fields too wet to plant until that tile pulls the water down. Come winter the same crew and the same machines turn to keeping the driveways and farm lanes over those same fields open, working ground they already know foot by foot from digging through it in warmer months. A field that drains slow in April tends to ice first in December, and the lane crossing it needs the earliest pass on a snowy morning. Trucks move out from Russiaville before the Howard County school buses do, clearing lanes back to farmhouses that sit a half mile off the blacktop. By the thaw, the same low spots that held snow longest are the first ones the crew is back out digging.
