Rush County lays out flat and square around Rushville, section-line roads meeting at right angles all the way to the horizon, with round barns rising out of the fields more often here than almost anywhere else in the country. Davis Asphalt spends its warm months laying and patching the driveways and lots that give this flat ground its only relief from gravel, and its cold months keeping the same blacktop clear once the snow comes sideways across all that open field. A plowed drive here shows dark and sharp against white for exactly as long as it takes the wind to load it back up, so the trucks run the same routes twice some mornings. Rushville's courthouse fountain freezes into its own small monument downtown while the crew works the square's lots before the shops open. It's the same asphalt underfoot all year—just a different job keeping it visible.
