Below Richmond's National Road bridges, the Whitewater River cuts its gorge through limestone the color of old bone, and the hardwood ridges above it hold the last real forest for miles around Wayne County. W.S. Forest Restoration Inc spends its year among those trees—clearing deadfall, restoring wood lots, reading which oaks will hold and which will come down in an ice storm—so when a January system buries the gorge-rim driveways and the gravel lanes back into the timber, the crew already knows every low spot and blind curve by heart. Plow trucks work the ridge roads before the sun clears the bluffs, cutting a clean edge along driveways carved out of the same forest they spend the rest of the year tending. Down in the gorge itself the old millrace ices over quiet and white while the trucks are still working the rim above it. It is forest work in every season but this one, and this one just happens to be white.
