The county roads running out from Portland toward the Jay County grain elevators are long, flat, and exposed, the kind of ground where wind can blow a foot of snow into a drift twice that deep across a driveway entrance overnight. This crew works those rural drives first thing, cutting through the drift right at the road so a farm truck isn't stuck idling at the end of its own lane. Gravel pads in front of machine sheds and grain bins get cleared wide enough for a truck and trailer to maneuver. In town, shorter residential driveways get the same steady treatment, plowed before the day's errands start. Midmorning finds the roads out past the edge of Portland open in straight dark lines against the white fields on either side.
