Fehling Excavating and Land Clearing spends most of the year moving earth and clearing timber on the farm ground around Hope, in the flat Bartholomew County bottomland where the Flatrock River cuts through corn and bean fields. When winter closes those jobs down, the same equipment turns to snow, pushing drifts off the long lanes that lead back to grain bins and farmhouses set well off the road. This is land built on a grid, section by section, and the crew knows it well enough to clear a lane by feel in the dark, long before help reaches the smaller roads. They work in toward town last, clearing the storefronts and side streets once the rural routes are open. It's heavy, patient work — the kind that doesn't look finished so much as it looks like the snow simply chose not to fall there.
