Long before Michigan City's lakefront lighthouse blinks awake, lake-effect bands off Lake Michigan have already buried the driveways east of Trail Creek in wind-packed drifts. D & M Excavating Inc runs its plows out while the harbor is still dark, pushing snow back off gravel lanes and lot after lot so the day can start on schedule. There's a particular satisfaction in that first blade-scrape of the morning, the crunch giving way to bare, black asphalt in a single clean pass. By the time the sun clears the dunes and turns the ice on the pier to glass, the crew has already moved three neighborhoods further south. It's steady work, done in the dark so nobody else has to notice it at all.
