A heavy wet snow in Marion bends trees before it bends anything else, and R&S Tree Service is usually out checking which limbs gave way overnight along the streets that catch the brunt of the wind coming down off the open farmland north of town. Clearing a driveway here sometimes means clearing what fell onto it first — a broken branch, a whole limb down across the end of the drive — before the snow underneath can even be reached. The crew works the oldest, most heavily shaded blocks first, where the canopy holds the most weight and the most risk, then moves to the open streets where a plow blade alone can finish the job. Winters like this ask for patience: waiting out a gust before climbing, checking a limb twice before cutting it, clearing the walk only once it's safe to stand under what's left overhead. By the end of the day the driveway sits bare and the tree above it is lighter, both jobs finished in the same visit.
