Madison drops straight down a bluff to the Ohio River, and its streets do the same, which means K&K Dirtwerks spends every storm fighting grade before it fights snow. A truck that can't hold a hill above the river is no use here, so the crew works the steepest blocks of the historic district first, salting the pitch before it glazes into something no tire can climb. Down along the riverfront the air stays a few degrees warmer off the water, softening what falls into slush that refreezes hard once the sun drops behind the bluff. Out past the edge of town, toward Clifty Falls, the ravines hold cold air and snow both, and driveways cut into that hillside need the same careful, low-gear clearing as the steepest street downtown. By the time river fog burns off in the morning, Madison's hills sit salted and passable, one grade at a time.
