State Road 54 runs east and west straight through Linton, and in April the ditches along it go green a full week before anybody's yard does. Root 54 Landscapes starts its year right about then, on the first mow, when the grass is soft and the mower leaves a smell in the air that the whole town recognizes. From there it is steady mowing, trimming and edging, plus keeping the beds around a house tidy so the turf has a clean line to meet. Spring in Greene County is generous and impatient at once — sun on Monday, two inches of rain by Thursday — and the schedule is built to keep up with it. There is a particular pleasure in that first cut of the season, when a lawn wakes up and finally looks like somebody's again.
