About Sprague's Lawn Service Inc.

Come the end of summer, Ligonier smells like a fairway of concessions and sounds like a marching band, and the brick storefronts downtown wear their painted murals straight through it. Sprague's Lawn Service Inc. keeps the grass around all of that — yards on the numbered streets, broader lawns out where the grain elevator stands taller than the rooftops. Late-season mowing has its own rhythm: growth slows, dew hangs on past breakfast, and the cut gets timed to the afternoon instead of the sunrise. Then the leaves start, and the lawns go into the cold raked even and combed out. It is ordinary work in a town that has never been especially ordinary.
