Noble County is a country of small glacial lakes, and Kendallville sits right in the thick of them, with Bixler Lake at the edge of town and Sylvan Lake not far off through Rome City. Landis Tree & Stump knows the wooded lots around that water as well as anyone — the same crew pulling deadfall and grinding stumps in October is back out before sunrise in January, plowing the long tree-lined driveways that wind in from the road under bare oak and maple limbs. Snow behaves differently under a canopy than out in open farm country: it drifts less along a wooded lane but lingers longer in the shade, so a driveway back in the trees can hold ice well after the open roads have cleared. Running a plow blade the full length of one of those lanes and coming out the other side to a lake glinting cold through bare branches has its own plain reward. By the time the ice finally lets go of Bixler Lake's edges each spring, the same trucks that pushed snow all winter are already back to clearing brush.
