The Cutting Hedge

About The Cutting Hedge

In old Jeffersonville the hedges are as much a part of the house as the porch rail, boxwood and privet grown up along wrought iron for longer than anyone living has been on the block. The Cutting Hedge works those September afternoons when the heat has broken and shrubs take a shaping well, cutting hedges back to a clean flat face and squaring the corners by eye. The lawn gets the same attention: mown even, trimmed close to the fence, edged where the grass meets the old stone walk. Every clipping is gathered and hauled off, because a hedge cut beautifully over a mess on the ground is only half a job. Come evening the yard looks composed, and the house looks like itself again.
