Garfield Park is the oldest in Indianapolis, its sunken gardens laid out in tiers that hold frost longer than the flat lawns around them once the season turns. Rooted Lawn & Landscape works the neighborhoods around that park on the near-south side, clearing driveways and walks on streets that slope gently toward the park's low ground, where cold air settles first on a clear winter night. The work starts early, before the frost has had a chance to burn off, blade and shovel moving down blocks lined with older brick homes built when the park itself was new. Snow here tends to linger in the terraced yards and low spots the way it does in the gardens themselves, so the routes are built around those pockets rather than a straight line down the street. It's grounded work in one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, done early enough that the block is clear before most people are out the door.
