Fort Harrison State Park, out on the northeast side in Lawrence, spent close to a century as an Army post before it became parkland, and the old brick barracks buildings still stand among the woods there, their long roofs and covered porches collecting snow in ways a newer building never would. The wooded lots that fill in around the old post -- narrower roads than the rest of Lawrence, laid out under a heavier tree cover than most of the city gets -- hold onto snow longer than the open subdivisions nearby, shaded most of the day even on a clear one. Working ground like that means slowing down and staying close, blade set low around root systems and old curbing that predates most of the trucks now running over it. The park's own trails and access roads, walked year-round by people who don't stop just because it's cold, get their own separate pass to keep them usable. It's wooded, historic ground with its own microclimate, colder in the shade and slower to let go of a storm than almost anywhere else nearby.
