Eagle Creek Park holds one of the largest stretches of open water and woods inside any American city, sailboats racked up along its shoreline every winter with their masts bare, and the wind that comes off that reservoir in January has nothing to slow it down for the better part of a mile. Houses on the streets ringing the park's edge feel that same open-country wind, drifts piling against fence lines and mailbox posts before a fresh inch has even finished falling, so a lot of the work out there is chasing drifts as much as clearing new snow. The park's own roads, closed to most traffic in winter, still need clearing for maintenance crews and the occasional cross-country skier who shows up at first light. Houses on the wooded lots nearby sit well back from the road, set behind long driveways curving between the trees the way the park's own trails do. It's the closest thing to wilderness inside the city limits, and the winter work there feels like it -- bigger, windier, more exposed than almost anywhere else in Indianapolis.
