Geist Reservoir sits at the northeast edge of the city, a long reach of water dammed up out of Fall Creek, and by January its coves freeze over calm and gray while the open middle stretch still holds a slate-colored ripple against the wind. The houses along that shoreline sit at the end of long, curving driveways that drop down toward the water, built for a view that in winter is mostly ice and bare trees, and those drives take a different route than a straight city street -- down a grade, around a bend, sometimes with a boat ramp or dock walkway thrown in at the bottom. Snow off the lake blows harder than snow anywhere else in that part of the county, drifting across those driveways in long ridges that have to be cut through more than once some mornings. Ice forms first on the shaded north-facing drives, the ones the low winter sun never quite reaches, so those get checked before the ones with a clear southern exposure. It's quiet out there in a way the rest of the city isn't, water and bare trees and long stretches of empty road.
