Meridian Street north of downtown runs under one of the oldest tree canopies in Indianapolis, maples and oaks planted a century ago meeting overhead in a long green -- and in winter, silver -- tunnel above the old mansions lining the boulevard. Ice collects on those high branches long before it touches the ground, and a hard freeze can send down a steady patter of small ice pieces onto the sidewalk below all morning, which changes how that walk gets cleared: slower, in stages, checked again after the thaw starts working on the canopy overhead. The side streets branching east and west, Meridian-Kessler's grid of brick colonials and deep front lawns, get their long driveways and wide front walks cleared before the canopy really starts to drip. Squirrels are usually the first ones back out on a cleared walk up there, working the bare patches under the big trees before anyone else is around. It's a neighborhood built for its trees, and clearing it means working with them instead of against them.
