Up along the White River on the north side, Holliday Park keeps a set of carved stone figures tucked into its woods, salvaged decades ago from a demolished building and installed among the trees like something left behind by a much older city. Snow behaves differently in that ravine than it does on open ground, drifting deep in the low spots where the river cuts through and staying powder-light under the tree cover long after it has turned to slush everywhere else. The houses on the streets above the park, set back on wooded lots with long, curving driveways, get cleared in that same quiet way -- a blade set to work around root systems and stone retaining walls rather than through them. Morning light comes late into that ravine, filtered through bare branches, so the last patches of ice sometimes hold until well past nine while the rest of the street has already dried. It's slow, careful ground, more woods than suburb, and it asks to be treated that way.
