Along the Shelby Street corridor on the near southeast side, the taquerias and paleteria stands that crowd the sidewalk all summer pull their tables in for the season, but the sidewalks in front of them still need clearing before the first customers show up for coffee and pan dulce. It's a tight-knit stretch of storefronts and apartments above them, narrow lots with barely room for a shovel-width path, so most of the work there gets done on foot, block by block, well before the buses start running. Ice forms fast in the shadow of those two- and three-story buildings, which block the low winter sun for most of the morning, so the same stretch of sidewalk gets a second pass by midday once the sun finally reaches it. Behind the storefronts, small apartment lots and duplex driveways round out the route, tucked in close where a plow truck barely fits. There's a rhythm to that part of the city even in the cold -- someone always opening a door, always sweeping a step -- and the work moves at that same steady pace.
