Southport is its own town, a square mile of Indianapolis's far south side that never gave up its charter, and the roads there run long and flat the way they do across most of that end of the county -- big lots, wide driveways, distribution warehouses set back from Southport Road behind acres of parking. Clearing that kind of ground calls for a bigger blade and a longer run than the tighter streets closer to downtown: a truck can get a real line going across a lot that size, pushing snow into a ridge along the tree line instead of picking around obstacles every few feet. The wind has nothing to stop it out there either, so drifts pile against loading docks and fence lines faster than the snow itself falls, and those spots get checked again after the first pass. Between the big commercial stretches sit ordinary ranch houses with long driveways of their own, quieter work that comes after the lots are done. It's flat, open country dressed up as suburb, and it plows like what it is.
