Fountain Square sits at an odd angle to everything around it, several streets meeting under the old theater's marquee at intersections that never quite line up square, brick storefronts built close enough to the sidewalk that any snow falls straight from roofline to walk. The neighborhood works on its own clock -- galleries and coffee shops opening late, a night crowd that doesn't clear out until well after the temperature drops -- so the sidewalks along that stretch get scraped twice, once before the shops open and once again before the evening crowd arrives. Ice collects at the low point where those streets funnel together, a spot locals already know to step around, and it gets extra salt before anyone else is up to notice it's there. The side streets behind the square, older two-flats with steep concrete steps, need a different kind of care -- narrow shoveling by hand, careful around the wrought iron and the potted plants people leave out even in January. It's a small, specific piece of the city, and clearing it well means knowing exactly where the ice hides.
