The near east side of Indianapolis is a neighborhood of brick bungalows and narrow lots, porches close enough together that a walked path from one house touches the next, and on a snowy morning the whole block gets cleared in the same slow pass, house by house, before anyone's truck needs to leave the driveway. These are modest streets -- no wide commercial lots, no long private drives -- just steps, sidewalks, a car-width strip of concrete that has to be bare by the time somebody in scrubs or a hard hat needs to get to work. A shovel does more of the work here than a plow ever could, scraping close along foundations and porch rails a blade would clip. Ice tends to collect first in the shade between houses, in the gap where two roofs nearly touch, so those spots get walked twice. By midmorning the block is a checkerboard of white yards and dark, swept concrete, smoke curling from chimneys up and down the street.
