An ice storm does two kinds of damage in Indianapolis, and both of them land in the same yard: a half-inch glaze that turns every walkway into a hazard, and the weight of that same glaze cracking limbs out of the old sycamores and tulip poplars that shade the south side's oldest streets. Down at Garfield Park, the city's oldest, the sunken gardens can lose whole tree limbs to a bad ice night, the wood coming down heavy and clean the way frozen wood does. Clearing a property after a storm like that means the shovel and the chainsaw go out together -- walks and drives scraped to bare concrete first, then whatever came down in the yard cut and hauled before it refreezes into the lawn. Some winters bring one storm like that; some bring three, each one worse than the last on trees already weakened. The work is loud where the ice is quiet, and it leaves a yard looking almost like nothing happened at all.
