Crown Hill sits on the highest ground in Indianapolis, a long ridge of oak and stone monuments where, on a clear winter morning, you can see the downtown skyline rising through bare branches to the south. Snow holds differently up there than it does on the flat streets below -- the wind off that ridge scours some paths bare and drifts others knee-deep against the older sections, so clearing it means reading the ground more than following a set route. The cemetery's own roads wind rather than run straight, narrow lanes built for horse-drawn processions long before anyone plowed them with a truck, and every turn has to be taken slow with the blade raised over uneven brick. Down off the ridge, the surrounding blocks of modest brick two-story homes get the same attention -- walkways, front steps, the short steep driveways that this part of the city is known for. There's a particular quiet to working that hill before the rest of the city is awake, nothing moving but salt hitting stone.
