At three in the morning the Circle belongs to almost no one -- just the limestone monument standing over an empty ring of storefronts, and a truck easing around it with its spreader ticking out salt in a slow, even arc. Downtown Indianapolis empties out fast after a storm, and the Cultural Trail's lamps throw long yellow stripes across ice nobody has walked on yet. By the time the first bus pulls in from the east side, the curbs along the Circle are bare and gritty underfoot, the crosswalks scraped to concrete, the loading docks behind the old buildings clear enough for the day's deliveries. Round the clock means round the clock: a second pass follows the afternoon flurries before rush hour, and a third catches whatever refreezes once the sun goes down behind the skyline. It is unglamorous work, done in the dark, in the one place in the city built to be looked at.
