Huntington's streets still trace the shape of a canal town, bending along the Little River and the Wabash before straightening out into the grid downtown. Snow crews working these routes know every one of those bends, clearing streets in an order built around where drifts collect and where the low ground near the rivers ices first. Winter here means keeping roads passable from the reservoir north of town, through downtown, and out toward Roanoke and Markle. It's steady work, route after route, storm after storm, following the same bends the canal gave the town two centuries ago. By the time Huntington wakes up after a heavy snow, the roads already look like the town simply refused to let the storm slow it down.
