The forested hills around Huntingburg hold onto a storm longer than open country does — trees break the wind but also shade the ground, so ice under the canopy can outlast the sun for days. Love Excavating runs its equipment out along the wooded roads between Huntingburg and Ferdinand, clearing long, steep driveways that a lighter truck would slide right back down. In town, the crew works the streets around the old Town Hall and the brick storefronts that have anchored Huntingburg's downtown for more than a century, then heads back out to the rural properties tucked into the hills. It's slower going here than on flat ground farther north in the state — every driveway has a grade to account for, every plow pass has to fight gravity as much as snow. What's left after they've come through is a town where the hills look tamed for exactly as long as the cold holds.
