About Street Department

Greenwood's Street Department runs its trucks out along Main Street and the US 31 corridor before the morning commute north into Indianapolis even starts to build, salting the arteries first and working out toward the subdivisions once the main routes are open. This is a town that grew up around that highway and around an old interurban line before it, and the grid of streets built up over a century still has to be worked in some kind of order — main roads, then school routes, then the rest. A storm that hits overnight means the crew is out before sunrise, plow blades scraping down to blacktop one route at a time while most of Johnson County is still asleep. Salt is already down and snowbanks already pushed back off the shoulder well before the first commuters pull onto US 31 headed for the city. It's steady, repetitive work, done storm after storm at hours nobody applauds, that keeps an entire town moving on schedule.
