Most of the year, Leising Excavating is moving earth around Decatur County's tile-drained farm ground, and once that same ground freezes solid in January, the equipment turns to moving snow off it instead. A crew that spends its summers reading how water drains off a field learns pretty quickly how snow piles and drifts across the same open acres, especially where a farm lane meets the county road and the wind has a clear run at it. Out past the edge of Greensburg, driveways stretch long between the road and the house, sometimes a quarter mile of gravel or blacktop that a smaller outfit wouldn't touch. Heavy equipment built for grading a foundation clears that distance in a pass or two, blade wide enough to open the whole lane at once. A rural Decatur County morning after a storm has its own kind of quiet — snow still deep in the fields on either side, one dark lane running clean from the barn to the mailbox.
