From the Hancock County Courthouse square, Greenfield's streets run out in every direction like spokes, and it's the Street Department's job to have every one of them scraped down to brick or blacktop before the town wakes. A crew works the loop through the night when a real system comes through, starting downtown around the square and pushing outward toward the subdivisions at the edges of town. Plows first, then the sanders, so headlights on Main Street find bare pavement instead of pack. It's unglamorous work done at hours nobody sees, but a town this size runs on it — school buses need a road, the diner needs its early customers to get there. By the time the courthouse clock strikes seven, the routes are mostly clear, and Greenfield gets back to being an ordinary Tuesday.
