The old Vanderburgh County Courthouse still holds its dome over downtown Evansville, and on a snow morning it's one of the few things tall enough to catch the first light before the streets below do. R. Evans clears the sidewalks and small lots around the civic blocks downtown, working early enough that office staff arriving for an ordinary Monday find the walk to the door already salted. Wind funnels between the old buildings downtown and drifts snow into doorways that a wider street would leave alone, so those entries get a second pass by hand. Curbside spots get cleared to the actual curb, not just to a rough line, since downtown parking is tight enough that every inch matters. By the time the courthouse bell would mark the hour, the blocks around it are clear underfoot, the dome still catching whatever light the morning has to offer.
