Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden rises on a low bluff on the city's North Side, its paths and greenhouse windows fogged over on the mornings after a real snow. Grade A Groundskeeping works the driveways and lots in the neighborhood around that stretch of high ground, where the extra elevation holds onto cold a little longer than the flatter blocks downtown. Driveways get plowed edge to edge rather than just down the middle, so a car parked overnight isn't boxed in by its own morning. The crew works the streets closest to the park gates first, since delivery trucks still need to reach the zoo's kitchens and barns even on a snow day. By midmorning the neighborhood is clear enough that the only white left anywhere nearby is the zoo's own quiet grounds, waiting for its gates to open.
