Reitz Hill climbs steep enough above the river that a light freeze on those streets turns them into something closer to a ramp than a road. Fitzscapes works the bluff's driveways and front steps, clearing snow off grades where a car left overnight can slide before its owner's even out the door. The old houses up there sit close to the street, so walks and stoops get cleared by hand in the tight spots a truck can't reach. Salt goes down heavier on the hill than on flatter ground nearby, laid in the same tire tracks and footpaths people actually use each morning. By first light the bluff's steepest blocks are gritted and passable, the river below moving on beneath it, indifferent to the cold.
