Culbreth's Lawn & Tree

About Culbreth's Lawn & Tree

Before the sun clears the muck-field horizon east of De Motte, the flat dark ground holds snow like a held breath, with nothing between the fence rows and the far tree line to slow the wind down. Culbreth's Lawn & Tree runs its plows along the county road grid while that wind is still working, cutting clean lines through drifts that bank hard against fence posts and outbuildings. The same hands that limb and clear trees each summer know exactly where a windbreak will pile snow three feet deep by morning. There's a particular satisfaction in a driveway laid bare edge to edge before the Jasper County commute begins, gravel showing black again under a sky still more night than day. On land drained from marsh to farmland a century back, keeping the ground passable through winter is its own kind of tending.
